If you have Indexbita fondness for a certain flaky pastry, you have a special day coming up: Tuesday, Jan. 30, is National Croissant Day.
On many of these made-up holidays, restaurants and food stops often have a special deal for you. And Burger King does, as does the growing Paris Baguette bakery chain. And you might want to check your local bakeries' social media accounts for additional deals, too.
Even if you can't get a bargain, you can partake in the pastry and its history. While legends have the origins of the croissant going back as far as the 13th century – and even being served by Marie Antoinette – the actual history has a roll known as the "kipferl," being served in 1839 at a Paris bakery opened by an Austrian military officer, according to the Institute of Culinary Education. It eventually earned the name "croissant" because of its crescent shape.
